Description: Poi is a form of dance, when weights on the end of tethers are swung through rhythmical and geometric patterns. It is a performance art rooted in the culture of the New Zealand Maori people. In this enrichment class, students will make their own poi (no FIRE) and practice hand eye coordination as they have fun learning the creative circus art of Poi . We will explore concepts of planes, timing and direction and develop that into basic movements and combinations. Students will work together in small groups to choreograph their own Poi routines to be shared with friends and family at the end of the enrichment session.
Amy Ransom is thrilled to be instructing this class at Jarrow. She has had a longtime passion for Poi Flow and Fire Dancing. She was a part of a Poi circus arts dance troop in Canada in her twenties.
